Is there something more disappointing than seeing a freshly cleaned car gliding by, only to notice the nasty brown tires?
In this guide, we will show you how to clean and dress your tires to really put the cherry on top.
There are dedicated tire cleaners on the market that work great, but a regular alkaline APC would also do the job.
We would suggest mixing your APC a bit stronger than usual since this type of dirt is often in the heavyweight division.
Step 1: Apply the cleaner
Spray the APC/tire cleaner directly onto the dry tire.
(We would advise you to clean the tires at the same time you clean your wheels.) READ ABOUT HOW TO CLEAN YOUR WHEELS HERE.
Important:
If you spray your tire cleaner while the tire is wet, you will dilute the product, meaning the cleaning power will be reduced.
Step 2: Brush the tire
Use a dedicated tire brush or, if you're not feeling fancy, use a dish brush.
Just make sure not to touch the wheel, as this can mar the surface.
Step 3: Wipe off the dirt
Use an old microfiber towel to thoroughly wipe away the loosened dirt from the tire.
Depending on how dirty your tires are, you may need to repeat these steps.
Step 4: Apply tire protection
For the final step, we recommend applying some form of protection to your tires. You have a few options:
- Tire coating – Long-lasting, but requires thorough prep work.
- Solvent-based tire dressing – Needs a fully dry tire before application.
- Water-based tire dressing – Our preferred and easiest option since it can be applied while the tire is still wet.
Now your tires should be deep black and ready to hit the road!
Just remember not to accidentally tell your girlfriend what happened to the dish brush. 😅
